Convention

My daughter Kara at Animethon 20 – Little cosplay Princess :)

Two weeks ago, I tagged along The 404s Improv Comedy group to Edmonton’s premiere anime convention Animethon!

I hadn’t been to Animethon in over 3 years! This week-end was the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the event – and also the return of my husband Mark Nguyen as MC for the big events such as the Opening/Closing Ceremonies and the Cosplay Contest.

Speaking of Cosplay Contest, I had planned for weeks to enter my daughter Kara in the new Junior Category and have her debut in the awesome world of Cosplay. After modifying her original Sailor Moon costume to fit her 3 year old body (she first wear the costume when she was 6 months old), I also made a full size “Moon Wand” using clay, paint and jewels from Michaels. We practiced her little “skit” for about a week to make sure she would be ready for the big stage.

Kara started to go to conventions and expos when she was 5 months old and never really stopped. She’s used to big crowds, long days, the noise, the costumes… and she’s hard to keep off the stage, especially when her mom or her dad are on it :)

Participating in the Cosplay Contest was just another milestone in her fantastic journey.

Being as photogenic as she is, it wasn’t long before she was swarmed by Animethon’s top photographers.

When she was called on stage as Entry #17, she immediately won the audience with her cute smile and strong “Moon Healing Activation”.  She did so well, and she knew it. We knew she would win something – and not just the “junior” prize. I was extremely proud, to say the least. Kara’s reputation was made. She was now a little cosplay star.

The Cosplay Awards were given at the Closing Ceremonies. Kara won FAN FAVORITE and once again was able to do her little skit in front of a thousand people. It was magic and the audience responded accordingly. Once again, I was overwhelmed by pride to see my tiny little girl owned the stage like she did. She’s definitively gonna be a performer later in life :)

Anime North Idol 2013 is this week-end!

Once again, I am in charge of Canada’s biggest Jpop and anime singing competition: Anime North Idol.

The event is this coming Saturday May 25th at the main event room at DoubleTree Hotel. We will have an audition session in the morning and the grand finale in the afternoon from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

Our celebrity judges this year are singing teacher Elana Laing, music producer and DJ Initial P as well as Extreme Anime Radio DJ Nef Canuck.

Ex-Pinku Project member Berry Risa will be performing the opening number.

Also, don’t miss the performance of our 2012 Idol winner Michelle at the convention Opening ceremony (Friday at 4:00 pm). She will sing again at the finale while the judges are delibarating to pick our new idol!

Please come and cheers for all our finalists! :)

PS: For those who may be wondering why I won’t be singing, I made the decision to reduce my stress levels for this year and better enjoy myself during the convention. As a singer, I am constantly worried about the condition of my voice, the Japanese lyrics of my song(s), confidence and look on stage and what-not. It is not easy to be a performer while being in charge of an event with a team of +10 staff members, VIP judges and 7 very nervous finalists :) I don’t require the spotlight at all costs. I am not that kind of person. A successful event with lots of happy people is all I want :)

New singing demo!! :)

I was listening to my 2012 Singing Demo that was featured on the right corner of the website and I was like… I can do better than than! lol :)

That is why I worked on a new song mix with some of my favorite recordings but also the new ones from last year and early 2013.  The goal of this singing demo is to show all my “different” voices and styles, my vocal range as well as my skills in 3 different languages (French, English and Japanese). Who knows, someone may be interested…. ;) I have also used exclusively photos from live performances to demonstrate that I am an expenrienced live performer and that I can take on any stage with lots of presence and charisma.

If you were wondering, the songs performed are the following:
1. Arcane from Ave;new
2. SMILE from My Little Pony Friendship is Magic
3. Garasu no Hana from Ikkitousen Dragon Destiny
4. Danzai no Hana Guilty Sky from Claymore (Riyu Kosaka)
